The Perhentian Islands have long captivated visitors for their seascapes and the dazzling reef life. But these marine ecosystems are also vulnerable to the impacts of pollution and overtourism. Ensuring that the reef is protected is important for local fishing communities and tourism businesses.
Through THF’s Sustainable Tourism Grants, Fuze Ecoteer is working with the youth (anak pulau) of Perhentian Island, promoting better tourism practices and empowering the youth to activate a reef conservation rescue unit. Find out more about this project as part of your #WorldOceanDay celebration.

The forests of Penang Island have long beckoned to the curious. These forest cloaked hills were some of the first to be explored by early naturalists, and today, they still harbour many more secrets still to be discovered. The Habitat Foundation is proud to fund research within the proposed Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve. This area has been nominated by the Malaysian government for listing on the UNESCO Man & the Biosphere Programme for its unique natural and cultural heritage.
Today, The Habitat Penang Hill seeks to continue this tradition of welcoming scientists and explorers to this rainforest gateway as we continue our shared mission to deepen our understanding of biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and to seek balance between human activities and the protection of our essential life support systems.

It’s not easy for our migratory shorebirds to arrive Malaysia’s shores between October to February for overwintering. May World Migratory Bird Day of 2021 reminds us it is our pride to host them as our guests by protecting their habitats. Watch Nur Munira’s journey with the shorebirds and be inspired!

With all of Penang as our classroom, the Habitat Bootcamp for Conservation Leaders & Changemakers is designed to bring together promising and passionate young people from Southeast Asia and Asia with the potential to make a significant contribution to conservation.
The Bootcamp provides a rare opportunity to learn valuable insights and skills from experienced conservation practitioners, learning that cannot be gained from textbooks. At the inaugural Bootcamp which was organized by The Habitat Foundation and Tropical Biology Association (TBA) in 2019, 24 specially-chosen changemakers from governmental and non-governmental organizations, academia, protected areas, and private organizations, came together to sharpen their conservation practice. The Bootcamp was also about building supportive peer networks towards achieving shared conservation goals.
With the challenges of the pandemic, we do not know when the next Bootcamp will be. For now, these clips are meant to capture some of the energy of the Bootcamp and encourage our Bootcamp alumni who continue to contribute to conservation in various capacities across Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, and Hong Kong!
