The project aims at documenting nearshore reef system along Kuantan’s coastline, and combine the scientific data with community survey on their perception and stories related to the reefs. The final output includes a documentary and coffee table book.

This project documents previously uncharted nearshore reefs along Kuantan’s coastline. It will generate baseline ecological and social data, highlight their ecological and community value, and support greater recognition and protection through research and storytelling.

Led by Senior Lecturer Muhammad Faiz bin Mohd Hanapiah, the IIUM team has been studying the coastal reefs of Kuantan since 2018. Their work has produced peer-reviewed research on reef biodiversity, ecological conditions, and conservation challenges in the region. With a strong foundation in field research, the team also emphasises science communication, translating complex ecological data into accessible narratives to raise awareness and support for reef conservation among communities, policymakers, and the wider public.

International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) is a research-driven public university in Malaysia focusing on the ”Islamisation of Knowledge,” which means they teach standard modern sciences, law, and humanities while incorporating ethical, moral, and Islamic perspectives. IIUM focuses on global research in sustainable engineering, community and biotechnology. In mid-2026, IIUM signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Enggang Management Services which encourages university research and boots-on-the-ground resources to protect critical habitats of highly endangered species, specifically focusing on the Malayan Tiger.
