This project supports the conservation of endangered Large Flying Foxes by building local capacity through a train-the-trainer model. It aims to establish Flying Fox Guardians to monitor roosts, detect threats, and generate data to guide long-term protection efforts in Terengganu.
The team will curate the module and conduct a train-the-trainer workshop to empower local communities to observe and monitor the population of endangered Large Flying Fox across 3 unprotected sites in Terengganu.
Led by Dr. Reuben Clements, this team of local and international experts brings over a decade of experience in flying fox research and conservation in Malaysia. Since 2012, members have conducted field research, community patrols, and outreach to protect Pteropus vampyrus, including reducing hunting pressure in Terengganu and shifting community perceptions in Pulau Tioman through ecotourism initiatives. Their work has also identified key roost sites and supported advocacy efforts for habitat protection. Combining science, community engagement, and policy work, the team continues to advance conservation of threatened flying fox populations in Malaysia.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are actions that protect, sustainably manage, or restore natural and modified ecosystems. Established by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), NbS depends on healthy ecosystems to naturally deliver crucial services. NbS practices climate change mitigation and adaptation through carbon sequestration by restoring and protecting carbon-rich ecosystems like mangroves and forest. In 2025, NbS has officially launched the Second Edition of the Global Standard for Nature-based Solutions to reinforce equity and rights by prioritising Indigenous Peoples and local communities at the centre of decision-making.
