A Biosphere Reserve is a special designation under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB), recognizing areas of exceptional biodiversity and unique social landscape. These reserves serve as living laboratories for sustainability, where people and nature coexist harmoniously.
The Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve (PHBR) is Malaysia’s third Biosphere Reserve, covering nearly a quarter of Penang Island’s northwest region. It encompasses Penang Hill, The Habitat Penang Hill, Penang Botanic Gardens, Penang National Park, turtle sanctuaries, water dams, and a rich tapestry of forest, coastal, and marine ecosystems—home to over 2,400 plant species and 550 animal species.

To make learning about PHBR engaging and accessible, The Habitat Foundation proudly presents a new set of PHBR leaflets—a pair of info and activity booklets designed to spark curiosity about the reserve’s unique landscapes and wildlife.
Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve: From the Hill to the Sea
Inspired by PHBR’s diverse ecosystems, the PHBR Info Leaflet and PHBR Activity Leaflet are designed with distinct themes:
- The Info Leaflet (Green) – Showcasing PHBR’s forests, biodiversity, and visitor gateways, it features a fun illustrated map, highlights key species, and offers tips for a sustainable and memorable visit.
- The Activity Leaflet (Blue) – Focused on ocean life, this interactive booklet includes matching games, a scavenger hunt, and an outdoor journal. Plus, the cover can be cut out as a postcard!
The cover designs of both leaflets are connected by a boulder, symbolizing the interdependence of land and sea ecosystems (and the info and activity leaflets)—reinforcing the idea that everything in nature is interconnected.
