Our Expertise

Rooted in practice

As a practitioner-led foundation, The Habitat Foundation is dedicated to conservation, research, education, sustainability, and training. We support biodiversity conservation and environmental protection through partnerships with experts, NGOs, and government agencies. We are actively involved in action on the ground, bringing in-depth knowledge and experience to solve the most critical issues facing the protection of nature.

Biodiversity Conservation

Biodiversity conservation is integral to the mission of The Habitat Foundation. The experience and understanding of our in-house experts allow us to support external projects to identify science-based, pragmatic, strategic and timely interventions for establishing areas of conservation significance and protecting threatened species.

Our work on the ground centres around technical assistance for biodiversity assessment, management and sustainable finance for protected areas, from large forest complexes to urban parks.

Environmental Education & Training

Since the establishment of The Habitat Penang Hill, The Habitat Foundation has been involved extensively in enhancing environmental education for school children and public awareness. We are committed to fostering a connection with nature in future generations by supporting environmental education, both in and out of the classroom.

With years of experience working with different ages and levels of education from 4-year-olds to university students, we develop bespoke Environmental Education Programmes. These programmes are specially designed for different locations by consulting the right target audience for best-fit content. We also deliver these programmes and sessions. Our environmental education programmes also connect culture to nature. With placemaking and cultural mapping, we involve communities to participate in shaping public spaces to enhance shared values.

Community Engagement

Preserving natural wealth requires the power of community. At The Habitat Foundation, we believe that all different knowledge systems are important in offering pathways to sustainable livelihoods and safeguarding biodiversity. Hence, we are actively engaging with communities in the landscapes we work in.

We tap into the wisdom of community-based conservation and sustainable tourism through social surveys and research, human-wildlife coexistence strategies, community workshops, and sustainable tourism strategy development.

Habitat Restoration & Enrichment

The Habitat Foundation is responding to the global call to restore our natural world for the benefit of people and nature. Only with healthy ecosystems can we enhance people’s livelihoods, counteract climate change, and stop the collapse of biodiversity.
We restore and enrich degraded ecosystems in ways that better engage and benefit local communities as partners. Our restoration efforts are based on scientific evidence, selecting the right local species that truly benefit the ecosystem as a source of food for native wildlife and a means of natural recovery.

Sustainable Tourism

Travelling should bring benefits to people and the environment by bridging transformative connections between people and the planet. Since co-chairing the Sustainable Tourism Malaysia, The Habitat Foundation has been working to increase the visibility of sustainable tourism in Malaysia on behalf of its members.

We craft opportunities for networking, skills-building, and resource-sharing for sustainable tourism operators. Combining our expertise in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and community engagement, we help locally-led operators curate journeys that improve local livelihoods while promoting care for cultural and natural heritage.
