Sustainable Tourism Malaysia

Travel has the power to bring benefits to people and the environment and nurturing transformative connections between people and the planet. Since co-founding Sustainable Tourism Malaysia, The Habitat Foundation has been working with its members to increase the visibility of sustainable tourism in Malaysia and awaken the wider public to the power of conscious travel.

Our STM network is a hub that addresses capacity building through experience and resource-sharing while also providing strategic input into tourism policy and initiatives at national level. Combining our expertise in biodiversity conservation, environmental education, and community engagement, we help locally-led operators curate journeys that improve local livelihoods while promoting care for cultural and natural heritage.

In 2024, with the support of a matching grant from the Ministry of Finance, the Sustainable Tourism Malaysia developed a project with a coalition of tourism businesses, service providers, and nonprofit organisations to strengthen sustainable tourism efforts and community engagement. Through collaboration, the project has been activating initiatives in multiple sites across Malaysia to:

Build capacity within the tourism sector to enable steady improvement in sustainable systems and practices
Boost recognition of Malaysia as a major destination for sustainable tourism in Asia
Enhance the participation of local people and businesses to boost contributions from sustainable tourism to the local economy.

Distinct ecosystems and geographical landscapes have been selected in order to model best practices and ensure the scalability of successfully implemented projects. The success of these projects has laid a strong foundation for continued growth, unlocking new opportunities and fostering resilience in the landscapes and communities. In 2025, STM will drive greater impact by engaging key stakeholders to champion sustainable tourism initiatives. Through strategic communications, we aim to amplify awareness and inspire community participation. At the same time, we will continue empowering local businesses to manage increased visitorship while maintaining service standards.

To date, we have been empowered with funding to support initiatives in 24 sites in 9 Malaysian states. In all these locations, this is part of a continuing journey, and for many, it is a journey that has just begun.
